  • National Poetry and Art Prizegiving Day 2016

    On Wednesday 25th May, Sligo Youthreach hosted the prizegiving ceremony for the National Poetry and Art Competition 2016 which theme was based around The 1916 Rising.

    As part of this day there was a Poetry workshop hosted by the poet Colm Keegan of Poetry Ireland.

    Afterwards the Prizegiving ceremony took place where the successful students received their prizes.

    There was a great turnout from various centres and long journeys were made by many. Centres that attended on the day were Ballinrobe, Bray, Roscrea and Sligo.

    Everyone was then entertained with some refreshments and some musical talent from Sligo Youthreach, Mark Kennedy on guitar and Zoe Twidale on bass guitar.

    A great day was had by all!

    Kevin O'Gorman from MUSO came to the centre on Monday to hold and songwriting/music/recording workshop with the students. They wrote and recorded an original track in the day and it is hoped to use this in our upcoming film. A productive and interesting day was had by all, we may have discovered some hidden talents!

  • 1916 3D winners announced

    Congratulations to the winners of the 1916 3D art competition. The first prize winner incorporated a composed poem into his art piece.

    The first place went to Darren Tynan from Roscrea Youthreach. We look forward to meeting you all at the prizegiving .

  • 1916 Poetry Competition Winners Announced

    The winners of the Youthreach 1916 Poetry competition have been announced by Poetry Ireland.

    We would like to thank all the entrants, all of the teachers who encouraged the entrants, all the centres who promoted the competition and Poetry Ireland for judging the entries as well as supporting us in this initiative.

    The competition encouraged Youthreach students to write an original poem based around The Proclamation, and each poem entered must have included a line from The Proclamation. 

     The poems were judged by Colm Keegan. The winners are:

    1st "Today" by Hannah Beattie, Youthreach Sligo

    2nd "Freedom" by Jade Killeen, Wicklow Youthreach

    3rd "Home from home" by Mateusz Lewandowski, Youthreach Sligo.

    Cael and LCA 1 student hosted a very enjoyable Table Quiz last Friday.  The tension was high till the very end with the last round being the decided. Thank you to all who got involved and well done to the winning team.

    Well done to the lads who represented us well in the Connaughts. We did well but unfortunately didn't qualify for the All Irelands. We wish Ballina the best of luck in the finals.

  • 1916 Celebrations in Croke Park & visit to Baldonnel

    Cael & Ewan represented Youthreach Sligo at the 1916 centenary celebrations in Croke Park on Monday last. You both represented Youthreach Sligo with pride and we were honoured to call you both our students. We look forward to March 15th when we raise the Irish flag in the centre and read the proclamation.

    Later that afternoon we enjoyed a tour of the Air Corps Casement Aerodrome in Baldonnel. On behalf of Youthreach Sligo we would like to thank Keith our tour guide for giving us an excellent tour and also to Dan Fitzpatrick for organising the tour. We hope to be back in the future..!   • Mountjoy & Kilmainham Visit

    Students and Staff recently visited Mountjoy Prison. We were given a very informative tour. We would like to thank the prison officers for taking time out of there busy schedule to facilitate us. Later that afternoon we visited Kilmainham Gaol, This was a very worthwhile experience for both staff and students. A great day was had by all!

    Youthreach Sligo recently got involved with Cranmore Age friendly Committee and Chemco Pharmacy to help host a coffee morning. This was a relaxed event and gave all ages a chance to chat in a friendly environment over a cup of tea. We are delighted to have been invited to take part.

    Its been a busy time since Christmas in Youthreach.

    One of our students as part of her Contemporary Issues task organised for people to knit blankets for Feileacain who provide memory boxes for parents of still born babies.

    Another student organised a football match against a team from our local refugee centre it was part of a Racism project.

    Bhí muid gnothach ar Lá Féile Bríde. Bhí a lán crosa éagsula againn.

     

    All that and our students had their LCA task interviews this week. Roll on the next month.

     

    One of our groups went to the Hawks Well Theatre to see Of Mice and Men, a book they have been reading an excellent production that was thoroughly enjoyed.
