Youthreach Sligo is a Centre of Education for early school leavers, who want to re-enter the education system. The centre caters for 40 learners ( both boys & girls ) at a time, in the age range 15 – 20. Learners from 16 upwards are eligible for a training allowance. The centre offers a number of programmes, including Leaving Cert Applied and a General Education Programme certified through QQI at levels Two and Three. The centre has a big emphasis on Personal Development and is engaged in the Special Education Needs Initiative led by Dr. Mary Gordon ( NEPS ). There is also a big emphasis on literacy with a well equipped library, full of books and 5 computer terminals. 1 to 1 literacy support is available, and the centre carries out a drop everything and read ( DEAR ) programme, as well as hosting a poetry day each year and producing a poetry book as part of this initiative.
What we offer
The type of subjects offered in the centre are; Metalwork, Woodwork, Home Economics, Art & Craft, Computers, Sport, English, Maths, Personal Development, C.S.P.E., S.P.H.E, Career Guidance and Counselling, Music and film making.
The centre facilities include a fully equipped woodwork and metalwork room, a kitchen, computer room, art room, classroom, gym and library. The centre gets involved in many activities throughout the year such as football matches, outdoor pursuits, trips abroad, film making, recording music, fishing and parade work.
